the phoenix city
fenghuang, hunan
jessica and i went to fenghaung for the may holiday that year. it was around my birthday, but i think we ended up getting back to xiangtan just in time. no festivities, no party. just some good old fashioned spur of the moment "let's go somewhere," and we did. fenghuang, a supposidly old and well preserved city in the west of hunan province:

the key selling point, all my chinese friends assured me, was that it was somewhat of a secret, and should be relatively uncrowded for the holiday. well, sure enough, it was packed, though surprisingly with just chinese people. foreigners haven't found this place out, which was fine enough for us. though not quite what we had been looking for, we managed to enjoy ourselves.
